When South Africans shoot off on holiday at Christmas, they head straight for: Hermanus, and in this small town on the West Cape, a comfortable two hour drive from Cape Town, the best place to stay the night is the guesthouse at 138 Marine Beachfront.

Hermanus is well known by experts on South Africa, because hundreds of whales collect here in this lovely, but rough bay every October. However, even in the months of winter – which are, of course, the summer months in South Africa – these gigantic mammals can be observed from the shore on many days. So what could be better than staying in a house that faces directly on to the ocean: 138 Marine Beachfront Guesthouse for example, which we discovered during our tour of South Africa. It is a very small, but very fine bed & breakfast with just 5 guest rooms. To put it in a nutshell: the most beautiful room in the guesthouse is The Sea Star Room, which is below on the ground floor. The staff treat you like friends and if you become thirsty, you can just help yourself to some delicious iced tea from the fridge. In the evening you can sit on the terrace facing the South Pole and listen to the pounding of the ocean, which can be very loud here. 

Ideal for: a two day stopover during a road trip through South Africa (for example Cape Town – Stellenbosch – Franschoek – Villiersdorp – Hermanus and then back to Cape Town along the coast road via Betty`s Bay). In Hermanus itself (about 30.000 inhabitants) you can not only do whale watching tours, but also visit the pretty interior and the Theewaterskloof reservoir. By the way, the Cliff Path in Hermanus is one of the most beautiful jogging routes in the world.

Best time to travel: as previously mentioned, the whales tend to arrive in the European autumn, which is September/October. However the ocean is too cold to swim in, but otherwise the ideal time is the South African summer between December and the end of March.
