Hollywood stars like Sophia Loren or Rock Hudson used to stay here in the 60s, but after a massive renovation, Hotel Zoo today stands out as the new place to be on Berlins Kurfürstendamm.
In Berlin, you have to be careful with new designer lodgings and restaurants. Sometimes the logo and the angle of the spoons is more important for the operators than the basics such as warm water or functioning coffee machines. However, the new hotel Zoo passed our test with flying colours. Warm water pours from the shower every morning and the room service breakfast works according to the old Grand Hotel model – there’s a tray with well assorted delicacies, accompanied by a fresh rose and a large pot of coffee, which is kept warm for a further three hours.
And despite the bold architecture of the American designer Dayna Lee, this place has very comfortable rooms. There is dark, clean parquet, the beds are large and made from the finest materials and in the evenings, the imposing high lobby is full of well dressed people, who even greet you in the lift.
Besides, the hotel has a lovely history in Berlin. Built in the year 1891, it’s been a hotel for more than 100 years. In the 50s and 60s, because of its location next to the movie theater “Filmpalast”, it became the lodgings of real Hollywood stars. Not only Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren slept within these old walls. In 2005, two real estate developers bought the building and spent the last four years having it extensively renovated at great expense.
