Just like in a hut: dormitory in the main building with communal bathroom and curtains for a bit of privacy

Up to 15 people can sleep in the dormitory

Theoretically even more…

The hay hotel Schleifmuehle
Maybe not the right place for people with allergies: In the “Schleifmühle” (grinding mill) in Unterammergau the guest can sleep in hay for 28 euros per night. We were there and had a look…
The guesthouse Schleifmuehle lies idyllically on a hillside and is located In Unterammergau, 50 minutes drive to the south of Munich and two and a half minutes drive from the famous Passion Play town of Oberammergau. The Schleifmuehle has got quite a few highlights. First is the location with a view to the Ammergau mountains, meadows and valleys. Second is the 300 year old watermill, which is a real attraction for guests and can be found next to the house and third: the hay hotel! We have to explain this in more detail, because hay hotels haven’t been around for very long yet:
Two years ago the boss, Klaus Aurhammer started to make plans to renovate his own apartment, which is on the top floor of the guesthouse. The idea: cyclists, bikers, and hikers were always looking for a place to stay the night, nothing special, but something “nice”. While visiting Lake Constance he discovered a hay bed. He liked it a lot, because it was “something different”. So, he decided to have hay beds made. Not by just anybody, but by a famous architect whose name is Christina Biasi von Berg, who lives in Meran and who also created the interior furnishings for the designer guesthouse Vigilius Mountain Resort in Lana/South Tirol. She left her mark in the Schleifmuehle too and this can clearly be seen. Imagine it like this: the tavern, with two or three parlours, is downstairs, outstandingly authentic, because the host is a passionate collector of old chairs, signs, jugs, tables, dolls and even cars. It was because of this that he “invested a lot of money” and had the Schleifmuehle moved into his garden, which was previously located on the mountain.
The only catch: the hay store under the roof is really a hay store. Which means that there is a communal bathroom – just like in a mountain hut. One is for ladies and the other for gents, and the living spaces in the dormitories are only separated by curtains. Whoever prefers a little more “privacy” there are three other rooms available and: this is what we liked the best: an own hut in the garden, the so called hay suite which boasts a terrific panoramic view and a private terrace on which you can eat dinner while watching the sunset.
Our tip: Celebrate milestone birthdays in the Schleifmuehle then stay with your party in the hay store. Lovestruck couples are obviously advised to book the hay suite in the garden.
Prices: hay store: 28 euros per person and night, hay suite 50 euros per person/ breakfast: 8,50 euros.
