Borgo Egnazia, Puglia / Italy

Ever since Justin Timberlake celebrated his wedding here with Jessica Biel, Borgo Egnazia has belonged to one of the most exclusive spots among the new holiday resorts. However, prominent people have never been a guarantee that the place is actually good. We were allowed to check in and didn’t experience a hotel, but more like a recreated village with first class service thrown in.

The Idea:

In the middle of nature, surrounded by two golf courses and the adjacent, deep blue shimmering ocean lies a collection of stone houses, which look like the old section of a southern Italian village. If you do a little research, you come to the conclusion that this was actually the intention: Aldo Melpignano, the owner of the hotel, didn’t want to ruin the area between the historical towns of Monopoli and Ostuni by building a posh designer place there, but rather a building that would fit into the landscape and region. In this way it would convey to the guests, especially families, the feeling of – let`s say “wonderful living in beautiful Apulia” - no matter what time of year. It is for this reason that Borgo Egnazia was built in the year 2011 with: 63 suites and rooms, 93 town houses, 28 villas, four swimming pools, three restaurants, two self-owned beach clubs, a 1,800 square metres large spa, tennis academy, bicycles and a unique 18-hole golf course with constant sea-view.

The Philosophy:

It is really quite amazing how this gigantic village with its intertwining houses and villas can radiate comfortable ambience. A big compliment must be paid to the local architect Pino Brescia. Maybe it’s because of the sand coloured stone, which is the dominant colour nearly everywhere. Or maybe it’s the concept of recreating an old village using the modern tools of art. To be honest: Other hoteliers can definitely learn a lot from Aldo Melpignano and his team. For example, how the light in each room can be creatively applied. Or: how the guests are looked after in the hotel bar. Or how to furnish the Trattoria with old wooden tables and make it into a family meeting place, and at the same time, have nothing to do with the typically tense atmosphere of a 5-star restaurant – and in which the children get their pizzas served after 15 minutes. Sure, we’re in Italy, in southern Italy to be precise, but there are very many places all over the world that don’t manage to create such an atmosphere.

Life at Borgo Egnazia: Coffee at the beach bar, Caprese at the Trattoria.

Ideal for:

Families with lots of children, golfers and in summer obviously everyone, who wants to enjoy a week’s holiday at the seaside, without having to forego the comfort of a 5-star resort.

Highlight:

The pistachio ice cream, which is decorated with a shot of olive oil by the waiter at the table. This sounds a bit shocking, but it tastes deliciously good.

Location:

Savelletri-Fasano lies in southern Italy on the Adriatic coast, so at the heel of the boot, between the towns of Bari and Lecce. Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/cpjxX

Prices:

In the low season a double room is available from 220 euros including breakfast, the main season starts at 396 euros. Half board is also to be recommended, which includes dinner.

Wellness:

The enormous spa, with everything the heart desires, including a large indoor pool, is located in the cellar of the main building.
