You could spend the whole day simply just gazing at the sea in the Don Ferrante hotel directly on the strand of Monopoli’s old town district. We did it in the quiet autumn season and experienced a rare jewel in the crown.
Wow! What a place this is! Directly on the sea! No, overlooking the sea. You see, in Don Ferrante the guest lives ten metres above the water, within the stone town walls, that used to keep the enemy out.
This Pretty Hotel lies in Monopoli, 35 minutes drive south of Bari, Apulia, Southern Italy. Monopoli is still a long way away from a big tourist region and exactly this is the advantage for the small town with a population of 40,000. There are only a few token tourists strolling through the alleys here and a cappuccino only costs a reasonable 1.70 euros at one of their very authentic coffee bars.
The Don Ferrante is so perfectly located on the water that you could easily spend the whole day just sitting on the terrace and admiring the open view to the ocean. In the summer there are a restaurant and sun beds there, which are reserved for the guests and are probably full of happy people. The stones have been dipped in white paint, but in the rooms they have been left beige. But what really hits you is that, even the rubbish bins are not made of plastic, but rather ceramic and carry the Don Ferrante icon. Insofar: more plus points, less minus.

Ideal for:

Visitors to Southern Italy, who want to stay directly at the water and also have a wonderful Old Town with authentic shops right on the doorstep.

Location:

Monopoli is located directly on the coast, between Bari and Brindisi. Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/JXhk2

Small disadvantage:

Unfortunately the bay right in front of the hotel is not ideal for swimming and sunbathing. However, the hotel does cooperate with many nearby beach clubs.

Price:

double room from 210 euros (low season) to 305 euros (high season) per room, including breakfast.
