Hotellerie de Mascognaz, Champoluc / Italy
There are many beautiful hotels, but very few exceptional ones: The chalet village, Hotellerie de Mascognaz lies isolated in the mountains of the Val d`Aosta and definitely belongs to one of the most exclusive addresses in the Alps. This is also because in the winter months it can only be reached by snowmobile and many of the guests who want to ski don’t bother with lift, but prefer to use a helicopter.
Even though it is located below the Matterhorn, the little skiing village of Champoluc, 100 kilometres north of Turin, doesn’t belong to one of the most luxurious addresses in the Alps. However, the Italian, Paolo Vitelli who is runs the luxury yacht brand Azimut Benetti, has turned this hotel project into something quite spectacular. The experience starts on arrival: the guests are chauffeured up into the wilderness of the resort by a snowmobile.
Yet, the hotel is not one of those minutely planned chalet villages, which are popping up everywhere at the moment. During this project Vitelli has retained the original facade of the historic mountain village. However, only on the outside. Within the interior the guest lives as if in a 5-star ranch – a mixture of lumberjack chic from Montana and modern art, which can also be found by the cosmopolite on the walls in St. Moritz or Gstaad.
There is a main building with a wonderful restaurant and small rooms, a further large building containing an imposing wellness area (pool, sauna, steam bath, etc.) and – strewn around the whole areal – various large chalets. Because the buildings are quite a distance apart from each other, it is probably not ideal for people who have difficulties walking, especially in the winter months.
When we visited, we were allowed to experience the advantages of a complete adventure trip. The german agency away from it all offers guests of Hotellerie de Mascognaz skiing safaris with a helicopter. This is quite thrilling, because Champoluc is only about six minutes flying time from the ski slopes of Zermatt and Matterhorn. The descent to the village is also possible without the helicopter.
Ideal for:
Everyone who would like to spend an unforgettable, but especially relaxing and authentic luxury holiday, surround by peaks four thousand metres high within a mountain landscape. Not only the furnishings of the chalets are sensational, but also the service and the evening menu.
Small disadvantage:
Because of the snowmobile transfer, it takes quite a bit of time to get to the lift in the morning and evening. Also the helicopter lands down in the village, not next to your bathroom in the hotel (…which obviously would be nice).
